A POWERFUL, CHILLING, TRUE STORY as featured in People Magazine and The Dr. Oz show 2016 -O, The Oprah Magazine 2003, and Oprah’s choice as one of the most talked about stories in O’s Top 10 Anniversary Special in 2010. Inside the life of a surrogate mother Susan Ring, a single mother of two who learns upon her second journey, with the same intended parents, she is pregnant with triplets. The parents demand a reduction to twins. The surrogacy agency informs Susan of the unbelievable, the parents no longer want the twins she is pregnant with, and the intended father is suffering from mental illness. The parents breach the contract, divorce, and abandon Susan and the twins at the hospital, ultimately insisting their children go to social services. Susan refuses to comply and boldly prepares to fight for parentage in a California court with no biological ties. It is a story of hope, love and letting go. This astonishingly honest memoir raises challenging ethical questions, redefines motherhood, and what it means to be a mother in today’s complex world of infertility. It recognizes how far advanced science has become, and how the law is lagging far behind. Above all, it is a story for our times.
About the Author:
I was born on an early winter morning in December, half a mile from the ocean in Southern California. To this day, I’m a lover of water, especially the ocean. Nature, in all i, s awe and wonder grounds me. My family and spend a lot of time together outdoors, and I do my best to bring the outside in as often as possible. My daughter has an amazing rock collection she keeps in her treasure box. I didn’t always pause for nature when I was younger, but now I’ve come to see and appreciate its simple beauty. It helps me remember who I am in this world.
I had two deep-seated dreams when I was a little girl. One was to become a mother, and the other was to be a writer. I became a mother for the first time at twenty-nine, and had another child. After an imminent divorce, I enjoyed pregnancy so much that I became a surrogate mother five times, for five different families birthing eight babies. Later, after my boys were grown, I met a wonderful man. He was the one. Upon my second marriage, my husband Paul and I decided to add to our family. I gave birth to my eleventh child at fifty-two. I’m now momma to our four-year-old daughter, and her older brothers have flown the family nest.
With no idea where to start on dream two, writing, I eventually put my pen to the paper, and then took on a Mac BookPro.
Many unexpected, old feelings came up writing my first memoir, much of why it took so long to write! The writing process has a way of magically healing many old wounds. It humbled me every time I put a word to the page.
On Mother’s Day 2017, The Unexpected Mother was born. Her labor took eleven years, a long anticipated birth. Book two is another memoir, follow up to this one.
